What it does
Fullfield Ambient creates the world around a performer: passers-by, traffic, the inside of a shop, weather and the sound that goes with them. A production records its performer on a closed set or a cleared private location, and Ambient fills in the street afterward with people who do not exist.
Ambient 2 can fill a scene with up to 3,200 people, each with their own gait and gaze, and adds weather to the Touch track, so that rain arrives on the performer’s shoulders a moment before it is heard.
Why we built it
First-person recording has always had a bystander problem. A person on a street who did not agree to be in a recording should not end up in one, and a release signed at the edge of a set is not the same as a choice. Before Ambient, a Fullfield production closed streets and cast hundreds of released extras for a single scene. Since September 2023, every person in the background of a new Fullfield title has been either a released extra or a person Ambient created.
How it is checked
Before a title is released, every face Ambient has created is compared with every face in our register of released participants, so that nobody who has appeared in one Sense/Net recording turns up uninvited in another. A person who believes they recognize themselves in a title can tell us, and we will check; the results are in our transparency reports.
What it is trained on
Ambient is trained on footage recorded by Sense/Net crews and on ambient first-person reference footage licensed from a Tokyo optics partner under the partner’s consent framework. Reference footage is used only to train and calibrate Ambient. It is held apart from the catalogue, it is never shown to viewers, nobody in it appears in a title, and it is outside the Consent Standard under §1.4, which covers material that no viewer sees.
Adaptive editions
Ambient also makes adaptive editions possible, in which the street, crowd and weather are created afresh for each play. The performer’s own recording is never changed. Every adaptive edition has an original cut one step away, and we do not keep a record of what any viewer saw in an adaptive edition.
