Fullfield

Fullfield Ambient: every face in a Sense/Net recording is now released or generated

A new production tool fills the world around a performer with generated crowds, traffic and weather, so no member of the public appears in a title without a release.

— Sense/Net today introduced Fullfield Ambient, a production tool that generates the world around a Fullfield performer: passers-by, traffic, shop interiors, weather and the sound that goes with them. From today, no member of the public will appear in a new Fullfield title without a signed release.

First-person recording has always had a bystander problem. A camera worn at eye level sees everyone the performer sees, and few of them have agreed to be in a recording. Until now Fullfield productions have closed streets and cast hundreds of released extras for a single scene. With Ambient, a production records its performer on a closed set or a private location, and the street is filled in afterward by people who do not exist.

Ambient was built by a team of 46 in Los Angeles led by Arun Mehra, and trained on 1.9 million hours of first-person footage recorded by Sense/Net crews. Every generated person is checked against the company’s register of released participants, so that nobody who has appeared in a Sense/Net recording can turn up in another one by accident.

About Sense/Net

Sense/Net makes first-person recordings. Founded in Los Angeles in 1988 by Maureen Vance and Gordon Pruitt, it records performances from the performer’s own position for Fullfield, its line of first-person titles, and keeps the Sense/Net Library, one of the largest collections of recorded performance in the world, in a former salt mine under Ashworth, Kansas. Sense/Net Holdings, Inc. is privately held.
